St. Alban the Martyr

St Patrick Window: The Central Panel; St Patrick as Archbiship of Armagh

This page is part of our project "Revealing St Alban's Hidden Heritage" supported by a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to players of The National Lottery.

In this central panel of the window we see St Patrick robed as archbishop of Armagh. Round his neck is the Pallium and in his left hand not a bishop's crozier but a primatial cross, symbols of his status as Primate of Ireland. At his feet grows shamrock, an allusion to his use of its trefoil leaf to illustrate God’s Trinity in Unity.

The story of his life begins in the bottom left panel of the window.
