St. Alban the Martyr

Decorative Glass in the St Patrick Window

This page is part of our project "Revealing St Alban's Hidden Heritage" supported by a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to players of The National Lottery.

The east window of the south chapel has some interesting decorative panels of crosshatched clear glass with golden highlights.

This decoration is quite unlike anything in the other Victorian windows in the church. The others windows are by the firm of Clayton and Bell, while this window is known not to be.

Does the style of this decoration give a clue to the manufacturer of this window?

The closest parallel so far identified is in windows of St Peter, St Paul, and the Blessed Virgin Mary by the firm of Lavers, Barraud and Westlake in the Church of All Saints, Kenton, Suffolk, which can be viewed here: http://www.suffolkchurches.co.uk/kenton.html and here: https://www.alamy.com/stained-glass-window-depicting-saint-paul-kenton-church-suffolk-england-uk-1871-lavers-barraud-and-westlake-image349370594.html.
