St Patrick Baptising Converts
This page is part of our project "Revealing St Alban's Hidden Heritage" supported by a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to players of The National Lottery.
In the top panel of the central light, St Patrick is baptising converts. He holds a scallop shell from which he pours water on the heads of two high-status converts, one of whom has cast his bronze circlet on the ground, watched by crowned figures. Patrick wrote that he baptised thousands of people and that he converted the sons of kings.
The quotation from Psalm twenty-nine “The Lord is upon many waters” is taken from the King James Authorised Version; the Book of Common Prayer has a different translation.
