St Patrick Refuses Food Offered to an Idol

This page is part of our project "Revealing St Alban's Hidden Heritage" supported by a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to players of The National Lottery.

This scene shows Patrick rejecting food that has been offered by huntsmen before an idol on a pillar at the left. This perhaps refers to the difficulties experienced at the start of his mission on his return to Ireland, as Patrick wrote of the Irish: "Never before did they know of God except to serve idols and unclean things. But now, they have become the people of the Lord, and are called children of God." This would fit with the quotation from Psalm eleven “The Lord trieth the righteous”. (These words are from the King James Authorised Version; the translation of the psalm is different in The Book of Common Prayer.)
