BIRMINGHAM CHURCHES NIGHT SHELTER
Since 2012 every year churches in Birmingham have organised a well thought out scheme to help some of the rough sleepers in our city off the street at night during the coldest months of the year. The scheme has been so successful that this year 12 churches have joined the scheme. Among these is also St Alban's in cooperation with the Stanhope Hall Community Centre at Ketley Croft in Highgate, not far from St Alban's Church. For six weeks starting on the 9th January every Saturday night 12 men – all registered, assessed and deemed to be low risk – will be sleeping on inflatable beds in Stanhope Hall. Six other churches will be doing the same for each day of the week. A second cohort of churches will start when the first six weeks expire. The guests will gather in the city centre and will be transported to each church. Beds, duvets and pillows will be provided. We have already volunteers for the nights, a cook for the evening meal and breakfast, and some volunteers (mainly from the neighbourhood) for the evening.
If you want to help, we need toiletries, towels, men's socks, prayers... Please contact Fr Nicholas for more information by phone: 0121 440 4605 or e-mail: nicholas.lopolito@stalbansacademy.org.
