Long-serving chorister

15 Jan 2025 • General news

It was with great pleasure at our Epiphany Carol Service last Thursday, that Fr. Gerry and Director of Music Angela Sones presented Edward Fellows with an RSCM medal and certificate for loyal service in recognition of Edward's unfaltering commitment of over 70 years as a chorister at St Alban the Martyr.

Many congratulations to Edward, long and faithful servant. Looking forward to the next milestone!!

Edward's wife, Maureen writes:

"Edward was born in November 1938 in a house in Conybere Street to parents who were regular members of St Alban’s. (His great grandmother was at the opening of the church in 1881.) His father, Ted, mother Edith, and aunt Mary were involved in the church in various ways. Hitler bombed them out and the family moved to the grandparents in Leopold Street. This was also flattened by Herr Hitler and the whole family moved out to Hall Green, but they still managed to get to St Alban’s, Ted was a very good Thurifer!

Passing the 11+ Edward went to Moseley Grammar School. In 1953 an older pupil came up to him and said that he was going to be the organist at SA. This was Roy Massey, then aged 17. Edward had been a boat boy and server, but Roy asked him to join the boys’ choir. He sang with the boys until he was 19, when, as his voice had not broken, he joined the men as an alto.

So one one way or another he has sung at St Alban’s for over 70 years."

Edward also served as Churchwarden from 1997 to 2016.
